Building Resilient Homes Together: USM & TU Delft Project

May 26, 2025

USM partners with TU Delft and Islanders at the Helm to co-create affordable, hurricane-resilient housing. Led by Ph.D. researcher Aga Kuś, the project unites students, experts, and the community to design grounded, climate-smart homes.
The University of St. Martin is proud to collaborate with TU Delft Global Initiative and Islanders at the Helm programme in reimagining what affordable, resilient housing can look like in the Caribbean.

In the wake of Hurricane Irma’s devastating impact in 2017, students from TU Delft’s Frugal Innovation programme joined forces with USM students, local community members, and experts to co-create practical housing designs tailored to our island’s unique climate and cultural context.

Led by TU Delft Global Research Fellow and architect Aga Kuś, the initiative focuses on homes that are hurricane-resistant, naturally ventilated, and rooted in local knowledge and building practices. The result? Innovative yet grounded solutions that show the strength of community-led design.

We extend our sincere thanks to all participants and to USM Research Coordinator Raymond Jessurun for guiding and supporting this important effort.
