November 5, 2021

According to Hospitality and Business Division head Jan van Beek, this is again a great example of what the fully-accredited curriculum of the Associate of Arts in Hospitality & Tourism Management program stands for.
Philipsburg- In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Managing Food and Beverage Operations course , University of St. Martin (USM) Hospitality & Tourism students passed the exams and received their Food Handlers Safety Certificates. The following students are the proud owners of such a certificate:

- Nishita Vasandani
- Khatija Solomon
- Stefany Santacruz
- Shadira Jermin (not in picture)
- Hamsley Barthelemy
- Shaquille Peterson

Course instructor Ms. Karen Hana thanked Michael Somersal of Steflogix, who made it all possible and facilitated the course free of charge. He added that as the students involved will be doing Internships soon: ‘It is definitely an advantage for them, they have this certificate under their belt’.

Ms. Karen Hana course instructor and Assistant to the Hospitality Division explained: ‘The aim of this unit is to provide students with background and operational knowledge of the food and beverage industry. Students will examine the different kinds of businesses found within the hospitality sector and the standards associated with them.

Students will be expected to learn the operational skills required to work within the food and beverage sector and gain an appreciation for the equipment and technology used in operations. Students will learn how they can gain commercial advantage both operationally and from a marketing perspective. Finally, students will also learn about which factors effect customer’s decision to purchase. Students will be able to use this knowledge as a foundation to develop a career in food and beverage management’.

According to Hospitality and Business Division head Jan van Beek, this is again a great example of what the fully-accredited curriculum of the Associate of Arts in Hospitality & Tourism Management program stands for. In the present accredited program, the focus is on truly preparing the students for careers in the Hospitality & Tourism Industry. “We aim to do this by integrating professional certificates in the academic program; hence, this is not the only certificate they are prepared for next to their academic degree’” van Beek said. USM is very thankful to persons like Mr. Somersal from Steflogix as well as many other companies in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry for the services and help given to the students of USM.

Coming January, a new cohort of the accredited HNC and HND level 4 and 5 of the BTEC (Business and Technology Education Council) in Hospitality & Tourism Management will commence. We are inviting everybody who has an interest in obtaining this international recognized diploma.
