Catherine Burns, M.A. (2019)
Graduate thesis presented and approved by the Organizational Leadership department at Royal Roads University in British Colombia, Canada.

Synopsis:
In September 2017, Hurricanes Irma and Maria left a trail of destruction in St. Martin, impacting the socio-economic life of an island dominated by the tourism industry. USM, as an institution of higher education serving country St. Martin since 1989, was correspondingly affected and pushed to (re-)consider its role in the process of post-hurricane recovery. Using focus group methodologies and by documenting events, dialogues and stakeholder responses, as well as by the engagement of the local business sector, this research looks at how sustainable tourism training and education programmes contribute to the economic life of the country.
