USM CFY Pep Talks Connect Students with Community and Alumni
October 13, 2026
The University of St. Martin has introduced weekly Pep Talks for its Caribbean Foundation Year (CFY) students, bringing professionals, community leaders and alumni to the campus to share their experiences, offer guidance and inspire the next generation of leaders.
The University of St. Martin has introduced a series of weekly motivational “Pep Talks” as part of its Caribbean Foundation Year (CFY) program, giving students the opportunity to connect with professionals, community leaders and USM alumni who can share valuable life experiences, career insights and words of encouragement.
The sessions kicked off last week with Nkosazana Illis, a holistic healer and social worker, who engaged the students in an inspiring conversation about personal growth and well-being.
This week, students will hear from Captain Peterson Bourjoly of SXM Airways, who is also a proud USM alumnus. His visit will give students an opportunity to hear from someone who has walked the halls of USM and gone on to build a professional career.
Next week, USM looks forward to welcoming President of Parliament Sarah Wescot-Williams, who will share her experiences and insights with the CFY students.
According to Shobhan Giterson, who also serves as Mentor to the CFY students, these short sessions play an important role in helping students see the possibilities ahead of them.
“These Pep Talks are important because they give our students the opportunity to hear directly from professionals and individuals who have their own stories and experiences to share. It's not just about listening to someone speak. It's about asking questions, learning from their journeys and hopefully walking away inspired to think bigger about their own future,” Giterson shared.
The weekly sessions, held on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings, are designed to expose CFY students to different career paths, personal experiences and perspectives while encouraging them to develop confidence, set goals and explore their own potential.
USM also encourages its alumni and members of the wider community to become part of this initiative by volunteering their time to engage with the students.
“We have so many talented individuals within our community, including our own USM alumni, who have valuable experiences to share. Sometimes all it takes is one conversation or one person's story to inspire a young person to see new possibilities. We welcome those who are willing to give back and help motivate our growing leaders,” Giterson added.
Through initiatives such as the CFY Pep Talks, USM continues to create learning opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, connecting students with the community and helping them build a foundation for their future.
USM alumni and community members interested in participating in an upcoming CFY Pep Talk are encouraged to contact the University of St. Martin at marketing@usm.sx or call +1 (721) 542-5171.
