Students from Saba and St. Eustatius who are part of USM's Bachelor of Education cohort recently participated in a valuable academic experience at the University of the Virgin Islands (UVI), Orville Edward Kean Campus in St. Thomas.
The visit took place on Sunday, February 22, when the students traveled together with their coordinator, Mrs. Juliana Shipley Hodge, as part of their education program. The cohort is currently completing several of their courses at UVI as part of their Bachelor of Education degree pathway.
Upon arrival, the students received a warm welcome from Safiya George, President of the University of the Virgin Islands, Karen Brown, Dean and Professor of the School of Education, and Demetria Lambert, Assistant Professor of Education and Academic Advisor to the students. The opportunity to meet with university leadership and faculty helped strengthen the students’ connection to the institution and the program they are pursuing.
During their stay, the cohort attended classes together and fully engaged in the university learning environment. They made use of campus resources, including the library and other academic facilities, to support their studies and collaborative learning.
The group also stayed in the university dormitories, allowing them to experience student life on campus. Throughout the week, the students had the opportunity to meet new people, explore the campus, and experience the island of St. Thomas, further enriching their educational journey.
The visit provided students with meaningful exposure to university life while strengthening their commitment to completing their Bachelor of Education degree together as a cohort. Experiences such as these highlight the importance of collaboration between regional institutions and reinforce USM’s commitment to providing students with opportunities that support both academic growth and professional development.
