USM ESL Classes Begin September 21 – Apply Now

The University of St. Martin is now accepting applications for its English as a Second Language (ESL) program, with the new semester beginning September 21, 2026.

The ESL program is designed for persons who want to improve their English one step at a time in a supportive learning environment. Students do not need to speak perfect English to start. The purpose of the program is to help them build their skills and confidence as they progress.

Classes are kept small, allowing students to receive more individual attention and giving them opportunities to practice speaking and communicating in English.

Students work on important areas such as speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary, while becoming more comfortable using English in real-life situations.

For many people living and working in St. Maarten, stronger English skills can make a difference. It can help someone communicate better with customers and colleagues, feel more confident at work, continue their education, help their children with school, or simply feel more comfortable communicating in everyday life.

Start at the Level That Is Right for You

Not sure what level your English is? That is okay.

Before beginning classes, students complete a placement test. The test helps the ESL Division determine the student's current English level and place them in the class that is best suited to their needs.

Students can then continue building their English skills step by step.

USM understands that learning a new language takes time and confidence. The ESL program therefore provides an environment where students can learn, ask questions, practice and improve without feeling that they must already know everything.

USM Encourages Employers to Support Their Employees

USM is also reaching out to businesses and organizations across St. Maarten that may have employees who could benefit from improving their English.

Employees may be excellent at what they do but need additional support communicating with customers, writing messages or emails, understanding instructions, or speaking confidently with colleagues.

Supporting an employee in improving their English can contribute to stronger workplace communication while also helping that employee grow personally and professionally.

Businesses interested in enrolling or referring employees are encouraged to contact the USM ESL Division to discuss the program.
