USM ESL Classes Begins Today

The University of St. Martin officially begins its Fall 2026 English as a Second Language (ESL) Program today, September 21. With five levels of instruction, the program helps participants strengthen their English skills and build confidence for everyday life, education and the workplace.
The University of St. Martin welcomes students to the start of its English as a Second Language (ESL) Program today, Monday, September 21, 2026, marking the beginning of another semester dedicated to helping members of the community strengthen their English-language skills and communicate with greater confidence.
The ESL Program is designed for individuals who want to improve their ability to speak, read, write and understand English for everyday life, education and the workplace. With five levels of instruction, the program allows participants to develop their skills progressively based on their current level of English.
For USM, the program is about more than learning a language. Being able to communicate effectively in English can help individuals participate more confidently in the workplace, pursue educational opportunities and become more comfortable communicating within the wider St. Maarten community.
“Learning English can open the door to so many opportunities, but just as importantly, it can give someone the confidence to use their voice,” said USM ESL Coordinator Mrs. Corinne Lejuez van Putten. “Our ESL program provides a supportive environment where students can learn at their level, develop step by step and become more comfortable communicating in their everyday lives.”
The start of the new ESL semester also reflects USM's continued commitment to making education and lifelong learning accessible to the wider community. Students entering the program come with different backgrounds, experiences and goals, but share a desire to strengthen their communication skills and continue developing personally and professionally.
Classes will run from September 21 through December 17, 2026 at the University of St. Martin.
As classes officially get underway, USM encourages individuals who are still interested in improving their English to contact the University as soon as possible to inquire about the program and available placement.
“Whether your goal is to communicate better at work, continue your education, help your children with school, or simply feel more confident speaking English, taking that first step can make a difference,” Head of USM Marketing Ms. Shobhan Giterson added.
