Pond Island, USM in collaboration with the Caribbean Higher Education Council of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (CHECK) and partner universities across the region, will host the Joint Virtual Kick-off of the Shared Chair on the Impact of Slavery on Thursday, September 18, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM.
This important event coincides with the 2022 - 2024 Transatlantic Dialogue on the legacy of slavery and will launch the Intermural Chair on Slavery and Its Consequences, a regional initiative supported by the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science (OCW). The Shared Chair unites scholars and institutions in Aruba, Curaçao, and St. Maarten to study slavery and its aftermath from a Caribbean perspective.
The research is structured around four work packages:
- Slavery’s Legacies: Trauma, Resistance and Resilience
- Impact of Slavery on Education, Teaching and Learning
- Immigration, Identity and the Condition of Labour
- Small Island Slavery
At the kick-off, professors and researchers from across the region will present the framework for each work package. Speakers include Prof. Dr. Rose Mary Allen, Dr. Paula Kibbelaar, Dr. Luc Alofs, and Prof. Dr. Antonio Carmona Báez, President of USM.
The event will be hybrid, taking place simultaneously at:
- University of Curaçao (Auditorium)
- University of Aruba (The Chapel at Maria Convent)
- University of St. Martin (Lecture Hall 202)
Virtual participation will also be available, with interactive features for audience questions and feedback. “By working together across our islands, this initiative strengthens our shared understanding of history while creating space for dialogue, research, and new perspectives on the impact of slavery today,” said Prof. Dr. Antonio Carmona Báez.
Community members, students, researchers, and the general public are invited to join.
Registration is required by September 16, 2025. Please confirm your attendance by emailing valda.hazel@usm.sx or events@usm.sx.
