USM Hosts Successful 2023 New Student Orientation

The orientation provided an invaluable opportunity for the incoming students to become acquainted with the university leadership and the resources available to support their academic and personal growth.
St. Martin, August 12, 2023 – The University of St. Martin (USM) welcomed its incoming class for the 2023-2024 Academic Year with a vibrant and engaging New Student Orientation, held on Friday, August 11, at the USM campus. The event marked the beginning of an exciting academic journey for the new students, and they were warmly received by university faculty, staff, and alumni.

Attendees had the privilege to hear from esteemed speakers, including President Dr. Carmona Baez who opened with a motivational speech inspiring the incoming students with his words of wisdom,
emphasizing the transformative power of education and the role of perseverance in achieving their goals.

He presented the open-door policy whereby students can contact management directly discuss any ideas, concerns, or feedback. Manager of Finance and Operations (MFO) Mr. Robert Judd spoke about the importance of students managing their financial duties to ensure a smooth journey. Interim Dean of Academic Affairs Mr. Wycliffe Smith gave words of encouragement and led an academic writing session which provided students with valuable insights and practical tips for effective redaction. Setting a positive tone for the students& educational journey, inspiring alumna Ria Khudan shared her motivational insights and offered practical tips for success during their studies.

Adding to the enriching experience, Ms. Joseph, USM Counselor, played a pivotal role during the orientation. Ms. Joseph provided students with valuable insights into the support services available to them throughout their university experience. She emphasized the importance of mental health and well-being, offering guidance on managing academic stress and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Coordinated by USM Admissions Officer Richard van der Mark, the New Student Orientation was a
resounding success. The event not only provided students with vital information but also created a sense of belonging and excitement as they embarked on achieving their goals in higher education.

Attendees left the orientation with a newfound sense of readiness to embrace the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. A notable highlight of the orientation was the opportunity for students to engage with their respective Division Heads, Mr. Jan van Beek and Mrs. Juliana Shipley Hodge. These well respected and experienced


educators imparted wisdom and guidance, ensuring that the students were well-prepared for their academic journey at USM. New students who were unable to attend the orientation are encouraged to reach out to the University & Admission Officer to receive essential details and information they might have missed. Mr.
van der Mark& door is open to address any inquiries and ensure that every student has the opportunity to start their academic journey on the right foot. Classes begin on Monday, 14 August.

As the fall semester kicks off, the team at USM encourages prospective students to consider joining. The spring semester applications are now open, and the team extends a warm invitation to the St. Maarten/Saint Martin community to apply and contribute to the island & academic growth and development.

USM remains dedicated to fostering academic excellence and holistic growth among its students, and the fall 2023 New Student Orientation was a testament to that commitment.
