USM Hosts Successful CFY Town Hall for Students and Parents

USM hosted a successful CFY Student and Parent Town Hall, bringing together students, families, USM representatives and partner agencies to share important information, answer questions and prepare students for orientation and the start of classes.
The University of St. Martin (USM) hosted a successful Caribbean Foundation Year (CFY) Student and Parent Town Hall on Friday evening, bringing together incoming students, parents, representatives of USM, MECYS, SEA and OCW for an informative and engaging session ahead of the start of the 2026–2027 program.
The Town Hall provided students and their families with an opportunity to learn more about the CFY program, understand what to expect academically, receive important information regarding registration and student support, and ask questions directly to the various stakeholders involved in the program.
The evening opened with a welcome and overview of the purpose of the Town Hall by Shobhan Giterson of USM Marketing, who emphasized the importance of ensuring that both students and parents begin the CFY journey with clear information and an understanding of the support available to them.
Mrs. Juliana Shipley-Hodge, Dean of General Liberal Arts and Education, welcomed the students and parents on behalf of USM and spoke about the University’s commitment to the CFY program and to supporting students as they transition into a college-level learning environment.
Providing an overview of the academic component of the program, Mr. Robert Judd, Manager of Finance and Operations, presented “Inside the CFY Academic Track: What Has Changed and What Students Can Expect.” His presentation outlined the structure of the academic year, the courses students will undertake and the expectations attached to the program.
Students and parents also heard from Lissa Carter, representing MECYS/SEA, who addressed student support, the role of SEA and the overall CFY journey. Her presentation highlighted the wider support network available to students as they progress through the program.
Stacey James of USM Admissions then provided important information on admissions, registration and the requirements students must complete before the start of the program.
A key part of the evening was the Student and Parent Question-and-Answer Session, during which attendees were able to speak directly with a panel representing USM, MECYS, SEA and OCW. Ms. Oralie Boirard Head of DEI also joined the panel discussion, helping to address questions and provide additional clarification to students and parents.
The open discussion allowed families to raise questions regarding the academic program, student expectations, registration, support services and the transition into CFY. The strong level of participation throughout the session reflected the interest and enthusiasm among the incoming students and their families.
The Town Hall concluded with final reminders and closing remarks by Giterson, including important information on the upcoming start of the program.
CFY students will begin orientation on Thursday, October 1, 2026, with classes officially commencing on Monday, October 5, 2026.
USM thanked all parents, students, presenters and partner representatives who attended and contributed to the success of the evening.
