USM and NIPA hosted a joint press conference to outline their integrated education partnership. The presence of MECYS Minister Melissa Gumbs and her Cabinet highlighted the national importance of aligning vocational and academic pathways for sustainable development.
The University of St. Martin (USM) and the National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA) hosted a joint press conference on Friday to formally present their recently signed Memorandum of Understanding and outline a shared vision for the future of education across Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius.
The collaboration represents a strategic integration of vocational and academic pathways, designed to strengthen workforce development, improve student mobility, and align education with national economic priorities.
Speaking on behalf of NIPA, Damali Bryson emphasized that the partnership is rooted in integration, innovation, and long-term impact. The institutions aim to eliminate silos between vocational and academic systems and instead create seamless progression routes for students.
A key focus of the collaboration is the introduction of the Caribbean Academic Foundation Year (CAFY) and Caribbean Vocational Foundation Year (CVFY), designed to address transition gaps from secondary to tertiary education. The initiative also explores articulated pathways in hospitality, social work, education, nursing, and allied health professions, while expanding opportunities within the Creative Industries.
With the support of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sport and the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science, the partnership positions education as a central pillar of national development and economic resilience.
Together, USM and NIPA reaffirm their commitment to accessible, forward-thinking education that supports lifelong learning and career mobility for generations to come.
