USM PANEL DISCUSSION ON POVERTY ERADICATION

October 14, 2023

Poverty is a violation of human rights and human dignity. Can we eradicate poverty in St. Maarten by 2030? USM invites all interested in the subject to this interesting discussion this coming Tuesday, October 17th, 2023, from 7:00 PM till 9:00 PM at USM campus (Room 202).
In commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the team at USM is proud to host a vital conversation on this pressing global issue.

In collaboration with the St Maarten Anti-Poverty Platform USM wants to renew its commitment and solidarity with the poor and the needy in St Maarten by bringing knowledgeable persons in government and civil society together to give a presentation and to discuss the possibilities of eradicating poverty by 2030.

Our distinguished panel of experts includes:

Ms. Gwendolien Mossel, Ombudsman of St. Maarten
Ms. Veronica Jansen-Webster, Head of the STAT Department, Ministry of TEATT
Ms. Tatia Brunings and Ms. Sharilyn Bryson, Policy Advisors, Ministry of VSA
Mr. Raymond Jessurun, Co-Coordinator of the St. Maarten Anti-Poverty Platform

This engaging evening promises to be highly informative. During the first part of the session, our panelists will deliver insightful presentations. We will hear from Ms. Jansen-Webster on recent poverty data based on the 2022 Census, while Ms. Brunings, Ms. Bryson, Ms. Mossel, and Mr. Jessurun will share their perspectives and initiatives related to poverty eradication.

The second part of the session is where the conversation truly comes alive. It's your opportunity to join the dialogue, share your insights, and explore the possibilities of eradicating poverty in St. Maarten by 2030.

As UN Secretary-General António Guterres rightly pointed out, "In our world of plenty, poverty should have no home." Yet, millions of people still lack basic necessities, facing poverty, discrimination, and distress. Can we break this cycle?

Poverty is not just an issue; it's a violation of human rights and human dignity. Let's come together as a community and discuss how we can make a difference.

USM invites everyone interested in this crucial conversation to join us on Tuesday, October 17th, 2023. Together, we can work towards a future without poverty.
